Residual Limb Care 101: Essential Tips for Comfort, Skin Health, and Prosthetic Fit

Daily Care Routine

  • Check for skin issues like redness, blisters, cuts, or pressure sores using a mirror if needed.

  • Wash your limb daily with mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water. Pat dry completely.

  • Moisturize at night with a non-greasy, unscented lotion to prevent dryness (avoid applying before wearing your prosthesis).

  • Wear clean socks or liners every day to reduce sweat and bacteria buildup.

  • Let your limb breathe by going prosthetic-free for short periods, if comfortable.

Preventing Skin Issues

  • Avoid prolonged moisture buildup—sweat can lead to irritation and infection. Use an antiperspirant if needed.

  • Rotate socks and liners to keep them fresh and dry.

  • Treat minor skin irritations early with appropriate creams or bandages.

Prosthetic Use & Fit

  • Ensure a proper socket fit—adjust sock ply as needed to prevent pressure points.

  • Monitor for volume changes—swelling or shrinkage can affect comfort and fit.

  • Inspect liners and sleeves for wear and tear; replace if damaged.

  • Keep your prosthetic clean by wiping it down regularly, especially the socket and liner.
